چکیده

Subjects (n=12) listened to the synthesized syllable tokens ba, da, ma, and na. Evoked magnetic fields were recorded using a 93sensor whole-head biomagnetometer array while subjects performed a same-different judgment task. A model of phonology which does not incorporate underspecification predicts no difference in the MMF for labial/coronal consonant pairs, regardless of which is presented as standard and which as deviant. An underspecification model, on the other hand, predicts an asymmetry – coronal deviants should elicit stronger MMFs than labial deviants. This asymmetry is exactly what we observe (F(1,11)=7.218, p=.02). This finding provides support for the existence of maximally abstract linguistic mental representations.

Against Underspecification in Speech Errors

This paper argues against the use of phonological underspecification in feature matrices on the basis of speech error data. Stemberger 1991 argues that phonological underspecification influences the similarity of phonemes. He claims underspecified features do not count toward similarity, based on an analysis of phoneme confusions in a naturally occurring speech error corpus. Using the same corp...

Phonological underspecification and mapping mechanisms in the speech recognition lexicon.

The problem of recognizing phonological variations in the speech input has triggered numerous treatments in speech processing models. Two areas of current controversy are the possibility of phonological underspecification in the mental lexicon and the nature of the mapping mechanism from the speech signal to the abstract lexical entry. We present data from cross-modal repetition priming experim...

Contrast and Phonological Activity in the Nez Perce Vowel System*

0. Introduction Features that pattern as inert with respect to phonological processes are often unnecessary in distinguishing segments in an inventory. A natural way of accounting for the phonological inertness of noncontrastive features is via underspecification. If noncontrastive features are absent from underlying representations and barred from the phonology, it follows that they will not b...

Phonological representations in dyslexia

Several researchers have linked under-specified phonological representations to dyslexia. In order to investigate the nature of the dyslexic's phonological representations, adult dyslexics with severe phonological decoding deficits listened to sine-wave speech and reported what was said. Results show no difference in perceptual performance between the dyslexics and the controls. Possible under-...

NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY SIMILARITY AND FREQUENCY IN PHONOLOGY A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Field of Linguistics By

Similarity and Frequency in Phonology Stefan Frisch This thesis focuses upon parallels between phonology and phonological processing. I study phonological speech errors and a phonotactic dissimilarity constraint, demonstrating they have analogous similarity and frequency effects. In addition, I show that abstract phonological constraints are influenced by the phonological encoding of lexical it...
